Il Tempio Delle Clessidre was named after one of the movements of Museo Rosenbach's "Zarathustra" suite. Which makes sense since the group's vocalist is none other than Stefano "Lupo" Galifi, the Museo Rosenbach vocalist. Here he recruited some musicians about a generation younger than himself, including female keyboardist Elisa Montaldo, as well as bassist Fabio Gremo, drummer Paolo Tixi, and guitarist Giulio Canepa. They, unsurprisingly, performed Museo Rosenbach's Zarathustra live, but they are fully capable of creating original material too, as this 2010 release on Black Widow demonstrates. So if you're expecting the heaviness of Zarathustra, you might end up a bit disappointed, although thanks to the singer, the elements of that Museo Rosenbach sound do surface. Instead they go for a brand of keyboard-driven prog not unlike Banco or Locanda Delle Fate. Even Elisa Montaldo's keyboard work can remind you of the Nocenzi brothers of Banco, except she uses Mellotron, or at least a rather convincing sampled Mellotron. I don't believe she uses vintage gear, although she makes great use of the gear she has which appears to be of the analog modeling type. This is one of those albums that really crept up on me. At first I thought it was decent enough, but upon repeated listens, this has simply became one of my favorite newer prog releases. I noticed a piano passage on "Danza Esoterica di Datura" that reminds me a log of Banco's "Metamorfosi", I guess no surprise, as Banco would be one of Il Tempio Delle Clessidre's big influence. This band nicely captures the spirit of classic Italian prog, which is great for those who dislike neo prog, or don't feel like Spock's Beard is the be all, end all of modern-day prog. I am not familiar with the recent-ish Italian prog like DFA, Finisterra, Deux ex Machina, A Piedi Nuda, and the likes, but I really think Il Tempio Delle Clessidre is highly recommended, especially those who like Banco or Locanda Delle Fate, or Museo Rosenbach fans wondering if their singer had done anything else worthwhile in the prog world.
