One of the best Mal Waldron CDs by far. Definite standout in that the different in the duo's playing is so tasteful, accessible, yet they still push it hard. The setlist is great. The Mood For Eric (Ded. To Eric Dophy) is the only song that gets a bit too free for the chill mode I was in while listening, but the listener is brought right back down easy on the next tune Waldron's Seagulls of Kristiansund. And the sound quality itself of this live duo performance recording is warm and close. Worth seeking out. So glad I found this. I had high hopes that this was going to sound impressive and oh does it. I like it much better than The Big Rochade. The interplay between the two here is unbelievable as they create semantically ineffable ear candy. I've listened to A LOT of Mal Waldron and I'm amazed at how different he sounds on this one. Hard to describe but it just sounds like he and Simion are inspired to there best (although I haven't head much other Simion, I will have to check out more. His horn playing is very warm. The CD is on Simion's own label.
